Miss Hilda, the 1966 VW Bug, Reaches California, Conquers Mountains and Yosemite and MORE!
Day 25 & 26 (Oct. 17-18) Nevada and California
These few days were a study in contrasts: the Nevada desert vs the California mountains!
We were enchanted by the serene, stark and elegant beauty of the Nevada desert. Wide vistas and the occasional painted rock mesa gave us lots of time to mediate as we drove. Truly a relaxing and fascinating drive.
California Dreaming! We hit the California line! The last state on our incredible cross-country tour.
I have to say that Miss Hilda and I were a bit traumatized by the very steep and curved mountain road we took to reach Yosemite National Park! Wow! The road ran along the edge of a mountain, without many guard rails, snow, a stiff wind and 8% road grade. Yikes!
We arrived in Yosemite and enjoyed this national treasure.
It was slow going, as we then decended the mountains, but we bravely chugged along. With Bob behind, giving encougaging pep talks via our walkie talkie!
Then we wandered along the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains as we made our way east, towards Santa Barbara!

Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose."
