Day 11 & 12 - Miss Hilda Tours South Dakota on Her Cross-Country Tour

During Day 11 and 12 (Oct. 3-4) Miss Hilda took a grand tour of South Dakota. And what an incredible state it is!

First stop was a visit to the famous Corn Palace. Really, who can't get behind corn -- or a building decorated with corn? As my friend Gina says, "If loving corn is wrong, I don't want to be right!"

Hundreds of miles later, Miss Hilda arrived at the Badlands. A sight I'd always longed to see. Even better than imagined! Mysterious, mystical. And as remote and beautiful as the surface of Mars.

Got into the hotel late at night only to discover that driving through rain for the last 2.5 days allowed water to leak inside Miss Hilda, through a previously unknown hole in her floor pan. Yikes. A bit discouraging, but it's part of the journey. Highs and lows.

So I cleaned things up as best I could, then bought many containers of DampRid, which takes moisture out of the air and fibers. We'll see if it works - Miss Hilda doesn't want a stained and stinky carpet.

On Day 12, we drove to Mt. Rushmore. Incredible! But unfortunately, an early snow storm arrived about a half hour after we arrived. Brrrrr. Then a quick trip to the Crazy Horse monument.

Did a bit of exploring in Rapid City, SD, which is a great little city! And we met "Bugster", an old, rusted out VW Bug that was parked in downtown Rapid City.

Check out the video, above, for great pics of Bugster!

"Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,

Healthy, free, the world before me,

The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose."
